Gay Budapest Basics
Budapest Gay Guide Budapest is the capital of Hungary with appr. 2 million people. Best time to visit is from early April to middle of November. Even during the communist era Budapest ("Paris of the East") had a lively gay scene and has always been known as a gay metropolis in Eastern Europe. Since 1998 there is a Gay Pride every year and didn't experience any problems until 2008, when the entire political climate in Hungarian turned right wing. But the gay scene here is still fun. However, you will not find gay bars and dance clubs or cafés for a specific audience (like a leather bar, a rent boy bar, a bar for chubbies, etc.). Everyone goes to the same places (age or preference doesn't matter). All of the bars (except some baths) are in the center of Budapest's Pest side, in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th district. Buda is hilly and residential, Pest is flat and the lively part of the city.
