Laws in Hungary
Since September 2002 the age of consent in Hungary is 14 for gays, lesbians and heterosexuals.
Same-sex marriage is not possible, but gays and lesbians - just like heterosexuals - can enter into domestic partnerships, which cannot and do not need to be registered. (For a specific purpose, one can ask for a certificate from the local government.) Domestic partnership allows very few benefits in Hungary. It does include the right to get information from doctors about the partner. It does not give the right to inherit property or the deceased partner's pension. It also does not allow adoption and tax reductions for domestic partners either. Domestic partners have to live together. The local government may check this through visiting them or their neighbors to ensure they live in an emotional and financial partnership. It is advised to ensure inheritance and other important issues by a testament or a contract made before a notary public or the local government.
There are no special asylum or immigration rights in Hungary for gays or lesbians. The government says it is working towards introducing a legal framework for homosexual couples, which could be brought before parliament in 2007, though it will still fall short of allowing same sex marriages.
